I got ganged up on by a bunch, and had to pot several times to survive

Now, I'm only a level 47 Dark Knight as I'm writing this... so I'm still killing Cyclops... But I can give a loose guideline FFXIV Gil for the next levels...

Once you get a defense rate of about 200-220, move on to ghosts. They drop lots of scale +4+option, jewels, etc (I partied there briefly and have heard the rest from many players).

Ghosts attack quickly, and attack in groups more frequently (I got ganged up on by a bunch, and had to pot several times to survive - and my def is at 195!), so you'll have to be a little more alert than when you're slaughtering cyclops.

Once ghosts aren't profitable, you'll probably be around level 60+. It's time to head back to Davias and kill elite yetis (this time, you're the leader!!).

You should be adding mostly to strength, but enough agility to use a really good 2-handed weapon (and to make up for the defense you'll lose when you give up your shield).

You'll need the 2-handed weapon in order to kill quickly, so make sure you own some good armour before you head out for Davias (you should have gotten a few jewels from the ghosts and cyclops).
